Madrid Open: Top Seeds Proceed to the Final 8 as Expected

A star-studded cast is set in the 2025 Madrid Open quarter-finals, as five of the Top 10 players in the WTA rankings are still alive. Aryna Sabalenka, Iga Swiatek, Coco Gauff, Madison Keys, and Mirra Andreeva are through to the final eight, and the Madrid Open 2025 odds don’t have a clear favourite among them.

Meanwhile, Ukraine is well represented in Madrid, as Marta Kostyuk and Elina Svitolina have also made it this far. However, only one can represent their country in the semi-finals because these two compatriots are slated to face off in the quarter-finals.

The clay court action continues to heat up in Spain, and SBOTOP brings you the latest Madrid Open 2025 updates.

Swiatek scrapes past Shnaider

Iga Swiatek’s Madrid Open title defence is still alive, as she has aced all her tests thus far. A few days after outlasting Alex Eala in the Round of 64, the Polish international followed it up with a straight-sets win over Linda Noskova and a 6-0, 6-7(3), 6-4 victory against Diana Shnaider yesterday in the Round of 16.

A nationwide blackout postponed play at the Caja Magica on Monday, and the power was restored at the venue on Tuesday morning. Swiatek saw the power outage as a positive since it gave her additional time to recover, and she needed it against Shnaider.

After a flawless first set, Swiatek lost the second to Shnaider in a tie-break. That lit a fire under the Polish international, as Swiatek restored order in the final set and clinched the victory after two hours and 34 minutes. Swiatek was forced to save 11 out of 13 break points in a match that could’ve had a different outcome had she not saved those likely in favour of Shnaider.

Swiatek’s clay court quarter-finals streak has reached 17 after the win against Shnaider. It’s the longest streak since Martina Hingis made 19 consecutive quarter-finals appearances between 1997 and 2002. The world No. 2 has also yet to lose before the quarter-finals in seven tournaments this year, but she has not gone past the semi-finals since Roland Garros last year. Swiatek will take on Madison Keys in the semi-finals, who defeated her in the Australian Open semi-finals last January.

Sabalenka is cruising along in Madrid

Aryna Sabalenka’s latest Madrid Open victory marks her 28th tour-level win of the season
Aryna Sabalenka returns a shot from Peyton Stearns during their Madrid Open match at the Caja Mágica

Aryna Sabalenka has made it to her fourth Madrid Open quarter-finals in the last five years after a 6-2, 6-4 win over Peyton Stearns in the Round of 16 yesterday. Tuesday’s match was Sabalenka’s 28th tour-level victory this year, putting her one ahead of Jessica Pegula, who has amassed 27 wins in 2025.

Sabalenka almost lost to Stearns in the second round of the 2024 Indian Wells Masters, so she was determined to perform. After a worry-free first set, Stearns threatened to send the match to a third set when she converted a break point to make it 3-3 in the second set, but Sabalenka went up 4-3 and reeled off the next three games en route to the win. The 26-year-old Belarusian converted four of her seven break points and fired 22 winners to Stearns’ 13 in the match.

She now has a 14-0 record against players outside the Top 40 this season and has accumulated 20 career wins at this tournament. The world No. 1 will face No. 24 seed Marta Kostyuk for a spot in the semi-finals. Kostyuk is fresh from a 6-3, 6-2 win over No. 39 seed Anastasia Potapova last Tuesday.

Andreeva and Gauff meet in intriguing clash of young stars

Coco Gauff and Mirra Andreeva – the youngest players in the Top 30 – will face each other for the third time in the Madrid Open quarter-finals.

Gauff is coming off a 6-4, 6-2 win over Belinda Bencic to book her ticket to the final eight. The 21-year-old American has reached the quarter-finals of every WTA 1000 tournament on the current calendar except Miami. Andreeva is back in the quarter-finals for the second straight year after a 6-1, 6-4 victory over qualifier Yuliia Starodubtseva. The 18-year-old Russian has already won two WTA 1000 events this year in Dubai and Indian Wells.

Gauff holds a 2-0 advantage in her head-to-heads against Andreeva, as the American beat the Russian in the 2023 Roland Garros third round and the US Open second round three months later. However, a lot has changed since then. Andreeva is on a five-match winning streak against Top 10 opponents, while Gauff has lost her only previous such match this year against Jasmine Paolini in last week’s Stuttgart Open.
