Women’s Euro 2025: Sweden Will Go For the Jugular Against England

After beating Germany, Poland, and Denmark in their wake, Peter Gerhardsson’s side will face England in the quarter-finals, where they can depose the defending champions.

England didn’t have a great start in the showpiece tournament after losing 2-1 to France in their opening game, but they bounced back with consecutive wins over the Netherlands and Wales. Sarina Wiegman’s women have built momentum, hoping it will be enough against their Scandinavian counterparts.

Blackstenius could be the key for Sweden

After notching shutout victories over Denmark (1-0) and Poland (3-0), Sweden had a brief scare after going down by one goal against Germany early in the match, as Jule Brand scored the first goal for the Frauenteam. However, Stina Blackstenius restored order with her equaliser five minutes later, and Smilla Holberg, Fridolina Rolfo, and Lina Hurtig joined in the scoresheet to notch the 4-1 result. Carlotta Wamser’s red card in the 31st minute also helped Sweden.

​Blackstenius is surely on top of England’s scouting report, as she has been a handful in the final third. The Arsenal forward has scored six goals in her last five international appearances, and she’ll likely link up with Rolfo, Kosovare Asilani, and Johanna Rytting Kaneryd in the final third. 

Peter Gerhardsson’s women are on a five-game winning streak during a 15-game undefeated run after losing to France in July last year. They will be looking to beat the Lionesses for the first time since recording a 2-1 victory in the third-place playoff at the 2019 World Cup. 

 

England flex their firepower

The opening loss against France must have lit a fire under England, as they went on to demolish the Netherlands (4-0) and Wales (6-1). The Lionesses head into the knockouts as the tournament’s joint-second highest scorers (alongside France) after they netted 11 goals in three group stage matches.

Georgia Stanway, Ella Toone, Lauren Hemp, Alessia Russo, Beth Mead, and Aggie Beever-Jones all found the net against Germany to ensure England’s second spot in Group D. James, Stanway, and Toone are the team’s leading scorers with two goals apiece. Alessia Russo notably hasn’t scored so far in this tournament, so we expect her to be ultra-aggressive against Sweden this Thursday.

England will need all hands on deck to unlock Sweden’s backline, which has only conceded one goal in this competition thus far. Head coach Sarina Wiegman will likely stick with the same starting XI she had in her last two games to try and make it happen.

 

History

Sweden and England were the finalists in the inaugural Women’s Euros in 1984. Sweden won via penalties after a 1-1 draw in regulation for their first and only championship to date.  The Blågult had three runner-up finishes since then, losing to Norway in 1987 and losing to Germany twice in 1995 and 2001. Sweden also finished third in 1989 and fourth in 1997, 2005, 2013, and 2022.

On the other hand, the Lionesses are the defending champions after winning it all in 2022, and they also had a runner-up finish in 2009 (besides 1984), a third-place finish in 1995, and fourth-place finishes in 1987 and 2017.

These two teams met previously in the Women’s Euro 2025 qualifying last year, notching a 1-1 draw and a goalless stalemate in Group 3 League A.
