Premier League: Fulham Can End Their Slide Against Southampton

Fulham’s pursuit of a spot in European football next season has taken a hit after losing three of their last four Premier League matches, and a visit to St. Mary’s Stadium to take on Southampton could temporarily cure their ills.

Marco Silva’s side are on a two-game losing streak following a 2-1 loss against Chelsea last weekend at Craven Cottage. Fulham are ninth in the English top-flight standings with 48 points, which is nine points adrift of seventh-seeded Aston Villa and sixth-seeded Chelsea.

Meanwhile, Southampton are at the bottom of the table with only 11 points. Because of their poor run of Premier League 2025 results, the Saints are guaranteed to return to the Championship next season. The Saints are winless in their last nine league matches.

Southampton out to salvage some pride

Southampton are officially relegated from the Premier League following their 3-1 loss against Tottenham earlier this month. With 11 points after the first 33 matchdays, the Saints are level with Derby County’s ignominious record for the lowest ever points total in the English top-flight. All they need to do is not lose all their next five matches to avoid the same fate.

​Ivan Juric left the club after the club’s relegation confirmation, and Simon Rusk is back as the team’s interim manager. Southampton have shown some fight under Rusk. They should’ve held Aston Villa to a goalless draw if they didn’t concede late goals from Ollie Watkins, Donyell Malen, and John McGinn. Rusk’s side followed it up with a 1-1 draw against West Ham United, as Lesley Ugochukwu scored a dramatic stoppage-time goal after trailing for most of the night, with no thanks to Jarrod Bowen.

The Saints have weapons to hurt the Cottagers’ backline. Paul Onuachu leads the team with four league goals and one assist. Joe Aribo, Mateus Fernandes, Cameron Archer, and Tyler Dibling have nine league goals and three assists combined. Kamaldeen Sulemana could be Southampton’s x-factor with his speed and ball handling.

 

Big contract decisions ahead for Fulham

Fulham are under pressure to qualify for European football next season, since doing so would give them leverage in their upcoming negotiations with some key players. Tom Cairney, Kenny Tete, Willian, Raul Jimenez, Carlos Vinicius, and Adama Traore are on deals which end on June 30. They could all leave the club in July, though Fulham can trigger Jimenez, Vinicius, and Traore’s one-year extensions until June 2026. All of them are essentially auditioning for new deals, and head coach Marco Silva can use this fact to his advantage.

Jimenez and Traore would likely sign new extensions because of their contributions to the club this season. Jimenez leads Fulham with 10 league goals and three assists, and Traore is the Cottagers’ second-best playmaker with six assists.

 

History

Southampton and Fulham shared the spoils in a goalless draw last December. It was Simon Rusk’s first match as the Saints’ interim head coach, and then-manager Ivan Juric (who replaced Russell Martin) was watching Southampton in the stands. Substitute Adama Traore had a glorious chance to win it late for Fulham, but his angled shot went too wide. Aaron Ramsdale was the Man of the Match following his superb saves against Alex Iwobi and Harry Wilson.

The Saints were undefeated in 21 home league matches against the Cottagers between 1937 and 2021 (W15, D6) but lost their last such meeting in May 2023. The 2-0 loss confirmed their relegation from the Premier League.

Fulham have won two of their last three Premier League games against Southampton (D1), as many as they had in their previous 11 (D5, L4).
