Premier League: Five Star Liverpool are the Worthy Champions

Arne Slot’s Liverpool lifted the Premier League trophy in some style on Sunday, with a 5-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur at a packed and bouncing Anfield stadium. The triumph gives the Reds the joint most top flight wins on 20, alongside fierce rivals Manchester United.

With a Europa League clash against Bodo Glimt to prepare for Ange Postecoglou made eight changes to his team, the most Tottenham Hotspur had ever made in the Premier League. But when former Liverpool man Dominic Solanke planted home a header on 11 minutes is seems his players hadn’t read the script.

The Anfield crowd, so optimistic before the kick-off, when ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ echoed around the stadium, fell quiet…but not for long.

Liverpool’s coronation as champions was back on track within four minutes, and it was a sublime move as Mo Salah found Dominik Szoboszlai with a threaded ball and he switched it back into the path of Luis Diaz who tapped home. Eight minutes further on and Liverpool’s celebrations were back in full swing when Spurs failed to clear and Alexis MacAllister smashed a 20-yard screamer high, past Vicario, and into the roof of the net.

The Premier League 2025 betting odds handed the title to the Reds some time ago but now the crowd really started to believe that this was the day as they sang, ‘We’re gonna win the league’!  34 minutes in and they were in dreamland as Cody Gakpo found space in the area to drill a low shot into the corner. The second half certainly went to script as the Egyptian King, Salah, got his goal with a typically classy finish, and Spurs’ day ended with a whimper as Destiny Udogie put through his own net.

This season, and this weekend belongs to Slot’s Liverpool, by far the best team in 2025.

Relegation confirmed for the Tractor Boys

Ipswich Town suffered 3-0 defeat against Newcastle United in the Premier League

Elsewhere, Ipswich Town became the third team to be relegated this weekend and, with four games still to play that s a damning verdict on the three clubs which were promoted last season. A 3-0 loss to Newcastle United hammered the final nail into the Tractor Boys’ coffin while at the same time boosting the Magpies’ hopes of a Champions League place as they moved up to third. Goals from Alexander Isak, Dan Burn and William Osula sealed Ipswich’s fate as they made a swift return to the Championship in the wake of Leicester City and Southampton’s early exits.

In other Premier League 2025 news Wolves, for so long the only team the bottom three could see in front of them, battered Leicester 3-0 to move up to 13th in the Premier League table. Meanwhile an injury time goal from Ryan Sessegnon gave Fulham a 2-1 win over the Saints and that result moved the Cottagers up to eighth in the table, and that might be enough to earn a European place.

Jackson revives Chelsea’s top five hopes

So we say goodbye to Ipswich, Leicester and Southampton, while at the other end of the table the race for the top five heats up, with Chelsea one of the hopefuls. And a goal from Nicolas Jackson, his first of 2025, gave the Blues a vital three points against Everton to move them up to fifth, ahead of Nottingham Forest who had an FA Cup date with fourth placed Manchester City on Sunday. Chelsea followed up two draws with a win over Fulham last week and back-to-back victories have come just at the right time for Enzo Maresca’s men.

Jackson’s 20 yard bullet was his first Premier League goal from outside the penalty area and it was enough to give the Blues a win but they should have been out of sight as Noni Madueke was three times denied by Jordan Pickford. Chelsea have a Europa Conference League semi-final against Djugardens on Thursday and the SBOTOP odds make them the tournament favourites; so there could be an exciting end to the campaign at Stamford Bridge.

Brighton and Hove Albion came from behind to score twice in the last five minutes to take all three points away from West Ham United to keep the Seagulls’ Europe hopes alive. Tomas Soucek put the Hammers 2-1 up on 83 minutes, but goals from Kaoru Mitoma and Carlos Baleba, with a 25 yard screamer, sent the Seagulls fans home happy. Brighton are in ninth, level on points with Fulham, while the Hammers are languishing in 17th, a full 15 points ahead of 18th placed Ipswich.

On Sunday Bournemouth looked like they would jump up to eighth, 1-0 ahead of Manchester United and well on top, until a bizarre VAR decision saw Evanilson sent off. And, with nine minutes of added time, the Red Devils equalised through Rasmus Hojlund on 95 to move up to 14th.

So it’s 20 titles each for Liverpool and Manchester United. I know who my money is on to make it to 21 first!
