La Liga: Barcelona Shouldn’t Underestimate Improving Getafe

Barcelona vs Getafe

Barcelona will stake their undefeated run so far this season when they host Getafe at the Johan Cruyff Stadium this Sunday evening. Hansi Flick’s men are playing catch-up with Real Madrid, who hold the solo top spot in the La Liga standings with four consecutive wins for 12 points.

The Blaugrana are right behind Los Blancos in second place with 10 points. They won against Mallorca (3-0), Levante (3-2), and Valencia (6-0), and drew 1-1 against Rayo Vallecano. Barcelona have momentum following their 2-1 win against Newcastle United in their opening Champions League match yesterday.

The hosts cannot underestimate Getafe, who have raised eyebrows in the first few weeks of the 2025-26 campaign. After their 13th-place finish last term, Jose Bordalas’ side won three of their first four matches (L1) for nine points, putting them in fifth place.

Talking Points

Flick will rotate his Barcelona squad

With the short turnaround between the Newcastle United game and the league contest against Getafe, head coach Hansi Flick will be compelled to rotate his squad, and it’s a good thing he has enough depth to see this through.

Lamine Yamal, Gavi, Marc-Andre ter Stegen, and Alex Balde remain out on Sunday due to injuries, and Pau Cubarsi is fighting against time to be 100-per cent fit after he picked up a knee issue against the Magpies. Flick could start Dani Olmo and Ferran Torres to replace Fermin Lopez and Robert Lewandowski, and Marcus Rashford should stay in the starting XI after his Man of the Match performance yesterday.

The Manchester United loanee scored a brace against Newcastle United, and his performance was impactful enough to earn him the Champions League Player of the Week citation. Joan Garcia, Eric Garcia, Jules Kounde, Ronald Araujo, Pedri, Frenkie de Jong, Gerard Martin, and Raphinha will likely start alongside Rashford.

After facing Getafe on Sunday, Barcelona will have four more games against Oviedo, Real Sociedad, PSG in the Champions League, and Sevilla before the October international break. Flick hopes that Barcelona won’t sustain new injuries.

Getafe have a dynamic duo

Getafe are punching above their weight because of their newly formed duo in the final third. Adrian Liso and Luis Milla have hit a rich vein of form, so they are on top of Barcelona’s scouting report this weekend.

Liso was loaned to Getafe for one year from Zaragoza, and he is relishing his new opportunity in the Spanish top-flight. The 20-year-old winger has found the back of the net on three occasions, including a brace against Sevilla, and he’ll pair up with Borja Mayoral in the final third.

Milla has also been a standout performer for Los Azulones, providing four assists in four appearances. The 30-year-old central midfielder will continue to operate alongside Mario Martin and Mauro Arambarri in the middle of the park in Jose Bordalas’ 5-3-2 formation.

History

Barcelona are unbeaten in their last 20 La Liga home matches against Getafe (W16, D4), including three shutout victories in their last three. If the Blaugrana secure another clean sheet this weekend, it would equal their longest clean sheet run at home against Los Azulones in the Spanish top-flight since a run between 2015 and 2019 (4).

The Blaugrana have scored in each of their last 24 La Liga matches, including all 23 they’ve played this year (64 goals in total). Only Bayern Munich have scored more (66) than Barcelona in 2025 across Europe’s Top 5 leagues.

Getafe have picked up points in five of their last 10 La Liga matches against Barcelona (W1, D4, L5). Their last success against the Catalan giants was a 1-0 home win in October 2020. Nine points from their first four league matches represent their best start to a season.

Betting Tip

The La Liga 2025 odds heavily favour the hosts to take maximum points this Sunday night. Barcelona are 1.21 favourites to win, whereas Getafe are huge 9.60 underdogs, and a draw is at 5.70 in the 1X2 market. Getafe can make this a tricky game for Barcelona, but the Blaugrana should be able to see this through to tack on three more points.

Both sides are capable of making new La Liga 2025 highlights this weekend. So, besides our recommended bet, bettors can also add Over 2.75 at 1.74 and Total Goal 2-3 at 2.16 to the parlay. Furthermore, a Correct Score of 1-1 – the result of their last league encounter – could yield a robust payday of 12.00 your bet.
