Champions League: Eintracht vs Liverpool… Now This Could Be Interesting!

Eintracht Frankfurt vs Liverpool

Three weeks is a long time in football.

When Liverpool fans woke up on the morning of the 27th September, top of the Premier League and with a Champions League win, over Atletico Madrid in the bag; they were looking forward to a trip to sunny Crystal Palace.

And then it all went spectacularly wrong!

The Eagles shocked the champions and four defeats in four games have left Arne Slot’s expensively assembled Reds reeling, down to fourth place in the Premier League and 17th in the early Champions League table. And now Liverpool must face one of the most unpredictable teams in European football. Dino Toppmoller’s Eintracht Frankfurt are scoring goals for fun, conceding freely and serving up a surprise, one way or another, every time they step on to the pitch.

This is a match full of opportunity for the Eagles and full of peril for the Reds, 90 plus minutes which I confidently predict will be packed with Champions League 2025 highlights. It’s a huge game for both clubs who really need a win, for rather different reasons.

Talking Points

Eagles are causing chaos

A period of calm would be wonderful for fans of Eintracht Frankfurt; but that seems unlikely the way things have been going recently. The Eagles have three wins, one draw and three defeats in the league, leaving them in seventh place, and one win from two in the Champions League, a steady enough start from two tough matches.

But that isn’t half the story.

After hammering Galatasaray 5-1 in their Champions League opener, the Eagles promptly went down by the very same score-line to Atletico Madrid. So they sit in 15th place in the European table, two places above Liverpool who are just below the seeded play-off line.

Jonathan Burkardt's superb form could be vital in Eintracht Frankfurt's upcoming Champions League game vs Liverpool

And the Eagles’ league form has been no less hectic. They followed up the slaughter of Galatasaray by losing a seven-goal thriller to FC Union Berlin. Frankfurt recovered from that loss by winning 6-4 away to Borussia Monchengladbach then, after they were slapped by Atletico Madrid, Toppmoller’s men went down to Bayern Munich 3-0 and last weekend they drew 2-2 away to SC Freiburg.

Jonathan Burkardt scored twice at the Europa-Park Stadion to make it four in three games while attacking midfielder Can Uzun is top scoring with five goals and three assists; and I wouldn’t bet against either of them getting a goal on Wednesday.

Reds are in turmoil

While the Eagles’ results are all over the place, Arne Slot’s Reds are only going one way.

Liverpool’s fall-off has been more dramatic than that of Paris Saint-Germain, who are having their own stumble in Ligue 1. It is not as yet as precipitous as that suffered by Manchester City between October and December 2024…but surely the alarm bells must be ringing at Anfield.

Sunday’s loss to Manchester United followed on from a 1-0 defeat away to Galatasaray and a 2-1 reversal away to Chelsea. But, following three consecutive away defeats with a loss to their old enemy on their home turf must have been the most painful yet. Things started badly for Liverpool as Bryan Mbeumo gave the visitors a lead on just two minutes, and the Red Devils held on until 12 minutes from time. Cody Gakpo levelled for the Reds but, as the Anfield crowd and most neutrals expected the Merseyside to pile forward and grab the winner, United centre-back Harry Maguire popped up to break Liverpool hearts.

The Reds have lost four in a row for the first time since 2014 and, after a spend of over £400m in the summer that statistic is little short of alarming.

Should Liverpool fall in Frankfurt I dread to think of the reaction on Merseyside.

History

Liverpool are Champions League royalty as six times winners, only Real Madrid and AC Milan have won more, and four times runners up. Frankfurt have only reached the final of Europe’s premier competition once, back in 1960; but the Eagles are twice Europa League winners, as recently as 2022.

With two wins, three losses and one draw the Eagles are arguably in better shape than their visitors who have won two (a while ago) and lost four.

Betting Tip

The Champions League 2025 betting odds are beginning to desert Liverpool who have dropped to sixth favourites to win the title, and they are in desperate need of a result to stop the flow of despair on the red side of Merseyside. Slot’s men are at a price of 1.65 to win this clash, while the Eagles are at SBOTOP odds of 5.00 and the draw is priced at 4.50.

It’s a tough one to call, but I don’t see Liverpool’s troubles ending in Frankfurt.
