First Der Klassiker Could Set the Tone in the Bundesliga Race

After the first six rounds of the 2025-26 Bundesliga campaign, the Der Klassiker is finally here. Bayern Munich will host Borussia Dortmund at the Allianz Arena this Saturday night. 

Bayern Munich’s title defence is off to an auspicious start, as Vincent Kompany’s men have won six league games on the bounce for 18 points. They also won their first two Champions League matches against Chelsea (3-1) and Pafos (5-1), and Bayern Munich are through to the DFB-Pokal second round with a 3-2 victory against Wehen Wiesbaden.

Meanwhile, Borussia Dortmund are second in the German top-flight standings with 14 points after notching four wins and two draws. Niko Kovac’s group is also undefeated in the Champions League (W1, D1) and is through to the DFB-Pokal second round.

They are the only undefeated teams left in Germany, but only one can come out unscathed (unless they share the spoils).

Bayern Munich’s Neuer on the brink of making history

Much has been said about Harry Kane, as he leads the Bundesliga Golden Boot race with a record 11 goals in the first six matches. However, their defence also deserves plaudits, as Bayern Munich have only conceded three goals so far this season.

Manuel Neuer continues to age like fine wine, and he remains a steady presence between the sticks. The 39-year-old goalie has reclaimed the No. 1 spot after an injury-riddled 2024-25 campaign, and he currently leads the Bundesliga in clean sheets (four) and has also saved 11 shots.

Neuer is already a legend, and he can achieve another piece of history in the Der Klassiker this weekend. He collected Bundesliga win No. 362 against Eintracht Frankfurt recently, which tied Thomas Müller’s record for most league victories in history, and he can surpass his former teammate on Saturday.

Head coach Vincent Kompany will likely stick with the same starting XI because he has no new injuries to deal with. Konrad Laimer, Jonathan Tah, Dayot Upamecano, and Sacha Boey are expected to provide cover for Neuer, with Raphael Guerreiro and Kim Min-Jae as additional defensive off-the-bench options.

 

Adeyemi is a transformed man at Borussia Dortmund

Borussia Dortmund will fancy their chances against Bayern Munich after improving their attack and backline under manager Niko Kovac, and Karim Adeyemi has stood out in the past few weeks.

The 23-year-old winger already has three goals and three assists in eight competitive games so far this season. Adeyemi has started in all but one game in the early stages of 2025-26, which was the DFB-Pokal first-round match against Essen.

Adeyemi won the Bundesliga’s Goal of the Month for September 2025 with his powerful left-footed volley against VfL Wolfsburg, giving BVB their third league victory of the season. With his speed and flair in the final third, along with striker Serhou Guirassy, Bayern Munich’s backline could be in for a long night.

Saturday marks the 138th edition of Der Klassiker, making it the most-played fixture in German professional football. The overall head-to-heads between these two sides are lopsided (across all competitions), as Bayern Munich have 67 wins, while Borussia Dortmund have 33 wins and 37 draws. Bayern Munich (15 matches) and Borussia Dortmund (14 matches) currently boast the two longest undefeated streaks in Europe’s big five leagues.

Die Bayern are on a three-game winless run against BVB (D2, L1), which is their longest such run since a five-game winless run between 2010 and 2012. However, they’ve won their first six Bundesliga matches of a season for the first time since the 2015-16 season, registering a league record 25 goals.

Borussia Dortmund have won their last two Bundesliga away games against the defending champions, 2-0 at Bayern Munich in March 2024 and a 4-2 result at Bayer Leverkusen in May 2025.
