Bundesliga: RB Leipzig’s Last Shot at Europe

RB Leipzig vs VfB Stuttgart

RB Leipzig are gunning for the sixth spot on the Bundesliga table since doing so will book their tickets to Europe next season. The Europa Conference League may be a downgrade for Die Roten Bullen, but it’s better than nothing, considering what they’ve gone through this year.

Zsolt Low’s side has 51 points, level with sixth-seeded Mainz. RB Leipzig hope that Mainz will lose or draw against Bayer Leverkusen, but they also need to take care of business against VfB Stuttgart, who will visit the Red Bull Arena in the final matchday of the 2024-25 campaign. Die Roten Bullen must break their winless run this Saturday.

In contrast, VfB Stuttgart are on a two-game winning streak after beating St. Pauli (1-0) and Augsburg (4-0). It’s a case of “too little, too late” for Sebastian Hoeneß’ men since they’re ninth in the German top-flight standings with 47 points, but they won’t mind taking another win.

Talking Points

RB Leipzig to miss key defenders

RB Leipzig are coming off a goalless draw against VfL Wolfsburg last Saturday, but they might find it difficult to do the same this weekend. Zsolt Low must be creative with his backline since he’ll miss key defenders against VfB Stuttgart.

Team captain Willi Orban is still dealing with a thigh injury and is doubtful for this weekend. Fellow centre-back Lukas Klostermann must serve his one-match suspension after receiving a yellow card against Die Wolfe. Benjamin Henrichs remains sidelined by an Achilles injury. Amadou Haidara (knee) and Xaver Schlager (hamstring) are also in the medical room.

Zsolt Low could go with Castello Lukeba, El Chadaille Bitshiabu, Kosta Nedeljkovic, and David Raum, with Lutsharel Geertruida as another option since he took the night off against VfL Wolfsburg.

Die Roten Bullen will need more from Xavi Simons, Lois Openda, and Benjamin Sesko – their three best attacking players this season. Simons already has one foot out of the door after announcing his intention to leave RB Leipzig this summer, but he must help his team one more time this weekend.

Woltemade continues to shine for VfB Stuttgart

With 11 goals this season, Nick Woltemade remains crucial to VfB Stuttgart’s Bundesliga hopes against RB Leipzig

VfB Stuttgart are in better form entering this weekend because of Nick Woltemade, who has been one of the league’s pleasant surprises this season. The 23-year-old German can play as an attacking midfielder or a forward, giving his team another dimension in the final third.

After scoring only twice in 30 games for Werder Bremen last term, Woltemade was picked up by VfB Stuttgart and turned out to be a massive bargain. He is Die Schwaben’s second-leading scorer with 11 league goals and two assists.

Sebastian Hoeneß’ side ran riot against Augsburg last week, as their visitors were reduced to 10 men when Samuel Essende was sent off in the 12th minute. Atakan Karazor, Nick Woltemade, Enzo Millot, and Ermedin Demirovic exploit Augsburg’s numerical disadvantage, and the team needs a similar performance against RB Leipzig.

History

Saturday marks the third meeting between RB Leipzig and VfB Stuttgart this season. Die Schwaben won 2-1 in the reverse league fixture last January at MHPArena, as Jacob Bruun Larsen and Nick Woltemade overturned a one-goal deficit created by Benjamin Sesko. Die Roten Bullen were reduced to nine men late when Sesko and Lois Openda were sent off.

VfB Stuttgart also won 3-1 against RB Leipzig in the DFB-Pokal semi-finals last month. Angelo Stiller, Nick Woltemade, and Jamie Leweling scored for Die Schwaben, and Benjamin Sesko scored for Die Roten Bullen.

47 points from 33 matches represent VfB Stuttgart’s second-best campaign since their top-flight return in 2019-20. On the other hand, 51 points from 33 matches represent RB Leipzig’s second-worst campaign.

RB Leipzig will miss out on the Champions League for just the second time in their Bundesliga history (also in 2017-18). They could also miss out on Europe altogether.

Betting Tip

The Bundesliga 2025 odds expect a tight contest between RB Leipzig and VfB Stuttgart. Because they’re playing at home, RB Leipzig have a slight edge at 2.04, whereas VfB Stuttgart aren’t far behind at 2.91, and a draw is at 3.73 in the 1X2 market.

Die Schwaben have been the better team than Die Roten Bullen this season, but this match is difficult to call. However, we’re sure SBOTOP football fans will see new Bundesliga 2025 highlights from this fixture, hence our recommended bet. Bettors can also go for alternatives like Under 3.75 at 1.78, Under 3.50 at 1.96, and Under 3.25 at 2.17

Moreover, a Correct Score of 2-1 in favour of VfB Stuttgart – the result of their reverse fixture – could yield a solid payday of 11.50 your bet.
