Women’s Euro 2025: France and Germany Slated for Blockbuster Clash in Basel

France vs Germany

France are one of the four teams in the Women’s Euro 2025 tournament with a flawless record. Laurent Bonadei’s women won against England (2-1), Wales (4-1), and the Netherlands (5-2) to take the top spot in Group D.

Meanwhile, Germany qualified for the knockouts, claiming the second spot in Group C. Christian Wuck’s side won their first two matches against Poland (2-0) and Denmark (2-1) but lost against Sweden (4-1) in the final matchday. Fortunately for the Frauenteam, the Netherlands and Wales didn’t have enough points.

France and Germany will vie for a semi-finals spot in the competition, as both nations will convene at St. Jakob-Park Stadium this Saturday evening. The winner of this contest will meet the winner of the Spain-Switzerland contest. Meanwhile, England and Italy will meet on the other side of the semi-finals bracket after acing their quarter-finals tests.

Talking Points

France are scoring goals for fun

France came out of Group D unscathed because they’ve been firing on all cylinders. With 11 goals in three matches, Laurent Bonadei’s side boasts the joint-second-most goals in the group stage. Marie-Antoinette Katoto and Delphine Cascarino led Les Bleus with two goals apiece, and Sandy Baltimore, Kadidiatou Diani, Grace Geyoro, Sakina Karchaoui, Amel Majri, Clara Mateo, and Sandie Toletti have one goal each.

During their 5-2 win against the Netherlands, France trailed 2-1 at the break, as Victoria Pelova recorded a goal for the Netherlands, and they benefited from an own goal from Selma Bacha to nullify Toletti’s 22nd-minute goal. However, head coach Bonadei must’ve given a rousing halftime speech, as Katoto, Cascarino (brace), and Karchaoui changed the complexion of the contest in the second half.

Despite having slightly less possession, France weren’t gun-shy, firing 20 total shots, with 10 of them on target. Les Bleus have never attempted fewer than 14 shots in this competition thus far, and this should be the case again versus Germany.

Germany have a right-back problem

Can Germany book a place in the Women’s Euro 2025 semi-finals by beating France?
Germany forward Carlotta Wamser reacts after receiving a red card during a Women’s Euro 2025 match against Sweden

Germany missed out on the top spot in Group C following a 4-1 defeat against Sweden in the final matchday. After Jule Brand gave the Frauenteam a one-goal lead, Sweden replied with four unanswered goals from Stina Blackstenius, Smilla Holmberg, Fridolina Rolfo, and Lina Hurtig.

What made the loss worse for Christian Wuck’s side is the 31st-minute red card of Carlotta Wamser, who made a handball save a la Luis Suarez after the half-hour mark to prevent a certain goal, and Rolfo calmly converted the subsequent penalty.

With Wamser suspended and Giulia Gwinn out for the tournament due to a knee injury, Germany don’t have a natural right-back available. Wuck will likely call the experienced Kathrin Hendrich to take the vacated starting spot against France. However, he can also have Sarai Linder replace Wamser, which will open an opportunity for Franziska Kett to record her fourth cap and be the starting left-back.

History

This game is essentially the rematch of the Women’s Euro 2022 semi-finals, where Germany won 2-1 against France. With the win, Germany booked their tickets to the final but lost 2-1 to England in extra time.

As mentioned before, Germany are the winningest nation in the Women’s Euros, with an astounding eight championships, including a six-peat from 1995 to 2013. On the other hand, France have never reached the Women’s Euro finals, and their best finish in this competition was third place in 2022.

France and Germany have split their last six meetings across all competitions, with the former winning 2-1 in their most recent one during last year’s Women’s Nations League semi-finals (2-1). Unfortunately for France, they lost 2-0 to Spain in the final, so they had to settle for a silver medal.

Betting Tip

The Women’s Euro 2025 odds expect a close contest between France and Germany. Because they’re in better form, France have the slight edge at 2.07, whereas Germany aren’t far behind at 2.97, and a draw is at 3.10 in the 1X2 market.

While it’s easier to root for France because they came out of a difficult group with a perfect record, we feel Germany will give them a huge run for their money. Either way, SBOTOP football fans at St. Jakob-Park Stadium should get their fair share of Women’s Euro 2025 highlights, hence our recommended bet.

Bettors can also go for alternatives like Over 2.50 at 1.71 and Over 2.75 at 1.92. Moreover, a Correct Score of 2-1 in favour of France – the result of their most recent encounter – could yield a solid payday of 7.70 your bet.
