France vs England
Speaking as someone who knows a bit about these two countries, this SBOTOP writer can tell you plenty about the love/hate relationship between France and England.
They have been enemies throughout history until the two countries made the Entente Cordiale in 1904 and they have been uneasy neighbours ever since, though with more in common that the matters that divide them. But the rivalry is intense, particularly in sport; and in recent times it is the French who can claim the upper hand.
On this side of the English Channel we’re looking for some joy in the Women’s Euro 2025.
While the Premier League is a much bigger draw than Ligue 1; in the men’s game, the Three Lions have endured 59 years of hurt since they won the World Cup way back in 1966; in the meantime Les Bleus have won the World Cup twice, the European Championships twice and the UEFA Nations League. In Rugby Union, France are the 2025 Six Nations champions and have won it twice since England were last champions in 2020.
We’re just glad the French don’t play cricket!
The England women have stood up where the men have fallen and, as reigning European champions they enter this upcoming Group D clash with France with their heads held high. But the Women’s European Championships 2025 betting odds insist this clash between les Bleues and the Lionesses will be as tense as ever.
Talking Points
Can Bonadei turn France into winners?
French football is on a high at the moment with Paris Saint-Germain winning the Champions League in May and Les Bleues are pretty buoyant coming into this tournament, unbeaten in 2025, in fact defeating all before them, including the might Brazil in their last warm-up game. Bonadei inherits a supremely talented group of players, but one which is yet to lift any silverware. France have a good chance this time around, over the border in Switzerland, but they will have to see off some of the best teams in the world. Les Bleues are currently tenth in the world rankings with England fifth; Spain are a team to watch as the second highest rated nation, with Germany and Sweden at third and sixth.

The omission of French legend Wendy Renard was the biggest Women’s European Championships 2025 news when the squads were announced, and the absence of all time top scorer Eugenie Le Sommer will be a miss, but that leaves space for Marie-Antoinette Katoto who missed the 2023 World Cup with an ACL injury. The Paris Saint-Germain striker is as lethal as anyone and England had better watch out.
Hannah has big shoes to fill
The last line of the Lionesses’ defence will have a different look to it after the retirement of the formidable Mary Earps, and the gloves will be worn by Chelsea stopper Hannah Hampton. The 24 year old has proved herself to be a brilliant keeper and the natural successor to Earps, and now is her chance to show what she can do on the biggest stage.
Lionesses head coach Sarina Wiegman will hope she can replicate her success of 2022 but the run up hasn’t been exactly perfect. As well as Earps retiring, Millie Bright has withdrawn and the team has picked up a couple of poor results, notably a draw with an inexperienced Portugal side.
England are a tournament side though and they will fight hard to retain their hard won title.
History
While England won the Euros in 2022 France are yet to break their tournament duck, reaching the semi-finals three years ago and finishing runners up to Spain in the 2024 Nations League final. But with nine wins to three Les Bleues have had much the better of the head to head results against the Lionesses.
And in terms of recent results the French have been supremely consistent with eight consecutive victories this year, while the Lionesses have won five, drawn one and lost two of their last eight outings.
Betting Tip
Les Bleues will believe they can start the tournament with a win at SBOTOP odds of 2.92, while the Lionesses are the favourites to kick off with three points at a price of 2.04, and the draw will have a lot of support at 2.97.
England have the big tournament experience but there is no doubting Les Bleues quality and they will believe, under Bonadei, that this could be their time. They might well miss Renard but France come into this match with some momentum which will take some breaking.
