Bundesliga: Barca Setback Should Motivate Borussia Dortmund

Borussia Dortmund vs Borussia Monchengladbach

Borussia Dortmund badly need a pick-me-up when they host Borussia Monchengladbach this Sunday at Signal Iduna Park for their 30th Bundesliga match of the 2024-25 campaign. The Yellow Wall are out of the Champions League, so their main focus is securing a European football berth for next season.

Niko Kovac’s men are coming off a 3-1-win last night against Barcelona in the second leg of the Champions League quarter-final tie, but that wasn’t enough to overturn their four-goal deficit after the first leg. BVB are eighth in the German top-flight standings with 42 points and are unbeaten in their last three league games.

Borussia Monchengladbach have a full week to prepare against Borussia Dortmund since they don’t have a midweek match. The Foals are above BVB in the table with 44 points, and they can sneak into sixth if they win this match.

Talking Points

Guirassy making a late Golden Boot push with Borussia Dortmund

Serhou Guirassy aims to boost his Golden Boot chances in Dortmund’s upcoming Bundesliga clash with Mönchengladbach
Dortmund forward Serhou Guirassy celebrates scoring his team’s third goal during the Champions League quarter-final second leg against Barcelona

Serhou Guirassy almost single-handedly won BVB’s Champions League quarter-final tie against Barcelona by scoring a hat-trick in last night’s 3-1 win.

Guirassy’s offencive flurry started in the 11th minute after he converted a penalty following Wojciech Szczesny’s foul on Pascal Groß. The Guinean international scored his second in the 49th minute, but Borussia Dortmund’s hopes of a comeback were derailed by Ramy Bensebaini’s own goal five minutes later. The Yellow Wall continued to pressure Barcelona, and Guirassy scored his third by pouncing on Ronald Araujo’s defencive miscue. The 29-year-old striker became the first BVB player to score 13 Champions League goals in a single campaign.

In the Bundesliga, Guirassy has 15 league goals – good for joint-third in the Golden Boot race. He last scored in the team’s 4-1 battering of SC Freiburg earlier this month. Guirassy almost scored in last week’s Der Klassiker during the 75th minute, though his miss led to the equaliser by Waldemar Anton.

Head coach Niko Kovac has a few injuries ahead of the Borussia Monchengladbach contest, as Cole Campbell, Marcel Sabitzer, and Nico Schlotterbeck are ruled out. Carney Chukwuemeka was given the doubtful tag due to a thigh knock.

Fitness concerns for Borussia Monchengladbach

Borussia Monchengladbach are at a numerical disadvantage against Borussia Dortmund since Gerardo Seoane’s side has more injuries. The Foals will continue to miss the services of Jonas Omlin, Moritz Nicolas, Nathan Ngoumou, and Philipp Sander. Meanwhile, influential midfielder Rocco Reitz is questionable to play after sitting out against SC Freiburg. With two of their top goalkeepers out, 19-year-old Tiago Pereira Cardoso will continue to man between the sticks for the Foals. Kevin Stoger or Florian Neuhaus could draw another start if the team rules out Reitz this Sunday.

The Foals also have a Golden Boot contender in Tim Kleindienst, who has the same tally as BVB’s Serhou Guirassy (15 league goals). The 29-year-old forward has formed a strong strike partnership with veteran Alassane Plea, who has 10 league goals and four assists this term.

History

Borussia Dortmund and Borussia Monchengladbach shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw at Borussia-Park last December. Jamie Gittens drew first blood for the Yellow Wall in the 65th minute, but Kevin Stoger scored the equaliser by converting his penalty six minutes later following Pascal Groß’ foul on Tim Kleindienst. The Foals were reduced to 10 men when Tomas Cvancara received his marching orders during stoppage time.

BVB have won 17 of their last 18 Bundesliga home matches against the Foals, including each of their last 10. Borussia Monchengladbach have never lost 11 home games in a row against a single Bundesliga side.

42 points from 29 games represent Borussia Dortmund’s worst Bundesliga campaign in a decade (36 points at this stage in 2014-15). That was also the last season in which Borussia Monchengladbach (fourth) were ahead of Borussia Dortmund (ninth) in the table after the first 29 matchdays.
